James Woodrow Classical Guitar Recital

Occuring
for 1 hour
Venue
Clare, St Peter & St Paul
Address
High Street Clare Suffolk, CO10 8NY, United Kingdom

James trained at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, and very quickly became established as one of the country’s leading contemporary classical and electric guitarists, beginning with performances of works such as Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint with the Rambert Dance Company, and in Boulez “Le Marteau sans Maitre”.

He is in continuing demand and much sought after by various contemporary music ensem- bles, such as Lontano and the London Sinfonietta, and is a long-standing member of both the Gavin Bryars Ensemble and Icebreaker. He performs regularly as soloist and ensemble player with the London Chamber Symphony, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, BBC Symphony Orchestra, the LSO, The New London Chamber Choir, Music Projects London, Almeida Opera and the BBC Singers.

James’s name is already familiar to listeners of Radio 3, being frequently mentioned during broadcast performances of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, in works featuring classical, elec- tric guitar, or bass guitar.
He is a frequent collaborator with a number of contemporary dance companies, in particular being associated with Richard Alston for the last two decades and with The Merce Cunningham Dance Company from 1999 until it’s close.

As a solo classical guitarist James has given numerous concerts. Repertoire over two decades has included Tippett, Britten, Kondo, Schlee, Elliot Carter, Takemitsu, Sauguet, Milhaud and Bach. A special dedication to new works but also to the music of Bach and particular Baroque composers of lute and harpsichord music, such as Denis Gaultier and Froberger has brought him to the attention of many composers. Recently Howard Skempton invited James to perform for Radio 3 the Interludes for guitar composed especially for him.

The programme for the evening will be:

* JS Bach Lute Suite in D minor BWV997

* Gavin Bryars "Epilogue from Wonderlawn" [arr. J Woodrow]

* Benjamin Britten Nocturnal Op70

Music in Country Churches has arranged concerts in over 55 country churches and made donations of nearly £600,000 to the churches that hosted its concerts. Artists who have taken part in the concerts include the Borodin String Quartet, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Murray Perahia, Sir Colin Davis, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and many others. The former Prince of Wales was the Charity’s first Patron, and over the years the former Patron and other members of the Royal Family have regularly attended our concerts.

Music in Country Churches has revisited some of the larger churches where it has held concerts. These return visits have been aimed at fundraising to help with the running costs of the smaller churches within their benefices.

“Our parish churches are an inalienable part of Englishness, the vertical centrepiece in every village composition, and the focus of so much that is important in our lives.”

Author Annie Garthwaite returns to Clare Church

Occuring
for 1 hour
Venue
Clare, St Peter & St Paul
Address
High Street Clare Suffolk, CO10 8NY, United Kingdom

Many of you will remember the wonderful event with had with Annie Garthwaite when she visited Clare Church in the summer of 2022. Annie talked about and read from her debut novel Cecily.
The historical novel was based on the real Cecily Neville who had links to our town of Clare in Suffolk.

1431 is a dangerous time for a woman to be defiant. England has been fighting France for 100 years. At home, power-hungry men within a corrupt government manipulate a weak king – and name Cecily’s husband, York’s loyal duke, an enemy. As the king’s grasp on sanity weakens, plots to destroy York take root… It will take all of Cecily’s courage and cunning to save her family. But when the will to survive becomes ambition for a crown, will she risk treason to secure it? Inside closed bedchambers and upon bloody battlefields, CECILY portrays war as women fight it.

I am delighted to report that Annie tells me that our event in the church is still one of her favourite events and has asked if she may return to talk about her brand new novel – The King’s Mother, which starts 30 years later as we return to the world of Cecily Neville…

1461 – Through blood and battle Edward has gained England’s throne as king by right and conquest – eighteen years old and unstoppable.
Cecily has piloted his rise to power and stands at his shoulder now, first to claim the title King’s Mother.
But to win a throne is not to keep it and war is come again. As brother betrays brother, and trusted cousins turn treacherous, other mothers rise up to fight for other sons.
Cecily must focus her will to defeat every challenge. Wherever they come from. Whatever the cost.
For there can be only one King, and only one King’s Mother. From the Wars of the Roses to the dawn of the Tudor age, this is a story of mothers and sons; of maternal ferocity and female ambition – of all they can build and all they can destroy.

Tickets just £5.00 and include a glass of something.

Tickets available now from Harris & Harris Bookshop (cash is preferred) Call 01787 277267 or pop in to collect your ticket.

The King’s Mother will be released on 11th July and reservations are always welcome, but not necessary as we will have plenty of copies of both books.

We shall be offering a discount of £2 off the price of the £16.99 book, making it a fabulous £14.99
